The third Media and Digital Literacy Camp for youth started on Friday,\u00a013\u00a0March\u00a02026, in Sarajevo. The camp brings together\u00a019\u00a0young participants from\u00a0across\u00a0Bosnia and Herzegovina who will, over the course of four days,\u00a0have the opportunity to\u00a0develop critical thinking skills, learn how to verify information, and navigate the digital space safely,\u00a0through interactive workshops, lectures, and practical exercises.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The camp\u00a0programme\u00a0focuses on topics such as media and digital literacy,\u00a0fact-checking, understanding how media and social\u00a0networks\u00a0function, as well as the challenges brought by\u00a0new technologies, including the development of artificial intelligence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By working with experts in the fields of media, communications, and technology, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to\u00a0recognise\u00a0manipulative content, analyze the credibility of information sources, and use digital tools responsibly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ferdinand Koenig, Head of Communications and Spokesperson of the EU in Bosnia and\u00a0Herzegovina, highlighted the importance of developing media and digital literacy among young people:\u00a0<\/span>\u201cProducing believable, but fake content has become increasingly easy, posing enormous risks for democratic systems that rely on trust and accountability. It is crucial that citizens in a democracy have tools to make informed decisions. One of the most important of these is the ability to distinguish verifiable and\u00a0accurate\u00a0information from disinformation and so-called \u2018AI slop\u2019.\u00a0The EU will continue to promote efforts that protect democratic values, including by financing media literacy training.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the\u00a0camp, participants\u00a0will discuss disinformation, the role of media in contemporary society, as well as the responsible use of digital technologies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Darko\u00a0Brkan, Executive Director of the\u00a0Citizens\u2019\u00a0Association \u201cWhy not\u201d,\u00a0emphasized the\u00a0value\u00a0of such educational\u00a0programs\u00a0for young people:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt a time when credible information is becoming increasingly rare and valuable, when the influence of artificial intelligence on how people receive information is growing, and when new challenges await us across every part of the online space, it is crucial that we are all as prepared as possible. This can only be achieved by strengthening media and information literacy for everyone, especially young people. That is precisely why we know how important programs such as this camp are, and we thank all the participants and lecturers of this and\u00a0previous\u00a0camps, as well as the European Union, which made these camps possible.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Camp participants\u00a0have\u00a0different backgrounds\u00a0and\u00a0interests, but\u00a0share a common goal \u2013 to develop knowledge and skills that will help them better navigate today\u2019s complex information environment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Media and Digital Literacy Camp for youth is organized by the citizens\u2019 association \u201cWhy not\u201d within the European Union project \u201cRaising Awareness and Knowledge of Media Literacy among Youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
