TransparenCEE workshop on Data Advocacy and Communication took place on 8th of April, in Centrum Hewelianum in Gda\u0144sk, Poland. It was held by civic tech expert Anna Kuliberda and Micha\u0142 Szota, a graphic designer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The aim of the workshop was to show the representatives of various non-government organizations from CEE regionwhat are the possibilities to promote the data they are collecting and make it more understandable for their audience.<\/p>\n

During the theoretical part Anna Kuliberda emphasized that data advocacy is as crucial as other elements of \u201edata life cycle\u201d (which are collecting, storing, verifying and analyzing of the data) \u2013 mostly because it enables organizations to make actual change. Micha\u0142 Szota pointed out that it\u2019s always good to remember that Internet is mostly visual and that\u2019s why a presentation of numbers or facts \u2013 as well as cooperation with a designer \u2013 should not be neglected by organizations who are dealing with data.<\/p>\n

Then, during the practical part, the participants were divided into 3 working teams. The teams were given a task to prepare \u201ea magazine cover\u201d for their project \u2013 preferably in a form of digital and interactive website which should contain unique multimedia content. Then projects were discussed by the trainers and the whole group. Within only 2 hours teams were able to create \u201ecovers\u201d for 3 different projects based on their deep knowledge of local budgets,prison conditions or cases of electoral frauds.<\/p>\n

The participants found workshop inspiring and useful.\u00a0<\/span>Iryna Shvets<\/span><\/strong> from <\/span>Ukrainian <\/span>organization \u201c<\/span>OPORA<\/span>\u201d <\/span>told us that sharing experience with people from other countries and discussing trends and tools in data <\/span>visualization<\/span> with them was the most important part of the training <\/span>for her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLearning from others\u2019 mistakes help<\/span>s<\/span> you not <\/span>repeat<\/span> them \u2013 and instead of that mak<\/span>e<\/span> your own\u201d, Jelena Berkovic<\/strong> from GONG added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs <\/span>NGOs<\/span> we do similar things \u2013 like budget <\/span>visualizations<\/span> for example \u2013 but in a case of every organization the creative outcome is different. That is why i<\/span>t\u2019<\/span>s so important to have the <\/span>opportunity<\/span> to meet and \u201csteal\u201d knowledge from each other from time to time\u201d, Cosmin Pojoranu<\/strong> from Funky Citizens in Romania concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n
